The Internet has changed the quantity and quality of data available about individuals' lives, but in many ways business practices and laws have not progressed to protect privacy.

Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Congress of US has passed various laws expanding government surveillance powers and federal agencies have undertaken a number of initiatives that pose serious threats to privacy.
