Lei Tao Learning Log
What drives me to Netherlands?
In the past, I was not the kind of person who cares much about what is happening or has happened before in the whole world. The issues of the outside world seem so far away from me and would not greatly impact me.
During the period of taking this class, it stimulated me to start thinking carefully why I am here, living in this city of this country. Where is the driving forces of this “Scenario”?
When I was in primary school, China was during the innovation period and developing to be a more international and modern country. People also enlarged their visions and wanted to learn more advanced science and technologies. So more and more began to learn foreign languages especially English that most schools set it as a major course. In this period, much foreign information flew in but I haven’t thought about going abroad.
Then I went to one of the top three universities in China. During those four years, I became more and more desired for get further study abroad. I want to experience a different life. At that time America was my aim because it had the most advanced research level and lots of excellent universities in the world at that time.
But 911-terror attack in 2001 made it hard to go to America especially for my major, electronic communication. When I was almost giving up, Chinese government offered me an opportunity to come here. A loss may turn out to be a gain. Netherlands is such a beautiful and developed country and the people here are very friendly. I really enjoy the life here. :)
As a whole, there were a lot of uncertainties such as the innovation of China, personal desire, opportunity, and so on. Here I take the first two as key issues and divide into four scenarios.
1) Hit to the spot Open circumstance and high desire to get further study opportunity makes the dream come true. 2) Half result with twice effort Strong desire but in a closed circumstance requires much more information and good luck! In order to achieve the goal, the person has to keep on looking for opportunity. 3) Stay in motherland I don’t mean to say that staying in motherland is a bad thing. It’s just a kind of choice. I know that a lot of persons don’t want to go abroad. 4) Lose the opportunity If in an open circumstance but low desire, it means even when there is opportunity, the person may neglect it.
