Virtual reality technology makes it possible to experience events a simulated world in real. In real means that an event that causes pain will also causes pain in the simulated world. This idea of simulating the world in real is not a new idea. This idea has been alive since 1956. It started with a 3D environment in which little interaction was possible. Now it is possible to interact a lot more intensive with virtual environments through recognition of facial expression, eye tracking, voice recognition, force feedback and other new developments in the virtual reality industry.

Virtual reality is often associated with a simulated room in which can be walked physically and actions can be taken place. The first purpose was to introduce virtual reality in this concept commercially. But poor performance resulted in a disappointed view of this concept. But over the years as the technology provided more and better techniques virtual reality came as another concept on the market as a commercial tool. The internet made is possible to begin virtual businesses, like internet shopping. In a virtual store a customer is able to look at items virtually. Although you can not feel, smell, hear and taste, the fact that you can see an item virtually gives this business the right to be labeled as virtual reality.

Also the video gaming industry makes use of virtual reality techniques. The famous one is the use of force feedback in controllers. During the game gamers feel vibration from the controller. In the past few years more and more virtual reality techniques are commercially available like voice recognition. The gaming industry sees these techniques as an opportunity to boost up sales and therefore makes its consoles compatible with these techniques. But is it possible that the virtual reality in the concept of a simulated room, in which can be walked physically and actions can be taken place, will be a competitor or a substitute of the game console?

Of course this is possible. Nowadays gamers like to play games that imitate the world very precisely. The better the world in the game resembles the real world, the better the game experience is. Furthermore gamers want to experience the game as real as possible. High sales of force feedback driving steers for driving games, high sales of microphones for giving commandos in a strategic game are signs of this fact.

In this sense it is likely that virtual reality will substitute the game console in its current form. This will mean that there will less demand for just a game console. Beside a game console additional items like cameras, gloves, 3D glasses, head mounted displays must be available for and compatible with the game console in order to create a virtual world.

The game console manufacturer can also choose to leave the game console in its current form and just to take interesting virtual reality techniques. Its main focus is not to simulate a virtual reality but to bring gamers’ experience to a higher level. This option means that virtual reality can become a competitor for the current game console manufacturers if another company brings virtual reality games on the market.
