According to a study conducted by the national centre of education statistics, attendance patterns among tenth-grade students is constantly decreasing. According to the same source a study conducted in 2006 reveals that only 12% of high school students believe that schoolwork is meaningful whereas 21% of students believe that their courses are interesting. Finally, 39% of the students participating in the research believe that school work will have any bearing on their success in later life.

Rewards versus punishment (which is extensively used in schools) seems not to motivate people in today's world. People doing more intellectual work are rather motivated by the presence of autonomy, purpose and mastery. This explains the growth of media based on volunteer work, for which contributors are actually the end-users (like youtube, wikipedia). The same, maybe even in larger scale is true for children).
