Description
Because there is an information explode on the internet, people become more aware of protecting their property and private information. One can get access to private information very easily nowadays and people therefore demand more security on private and confidential information. Confidential information about, for example exams, politics and business deals, online banking are more important to be protected then other kinds of information and can’t even be shared on internet when it is not protected. Intellectual property states clearly what is patented and who owns the copyright, so protection is more clear. In this way, the information that could be shared, is the information that the owner wants to share.

1) Teamwork across geographical boundaries
Because more organizations are becoming multinationals, there is more need for knowledge sharing across geographical boundaries and even across organizational boundaries. This information should be protected and secured and only between the company employees.
2) The need for communication and information
Because there is a need to communicate information, there will always be sharing of information. And because of sharing information, confidential information will also be shared and this needs to be protected by patent or copyright.
3) Booming of internet industry
The booming of the internet industry increases the sharing of (private) information that needs to be protected. The more information on the internet, the more difficult it will become to protect.

The technology needs to be improved better to make the protection better. You still hear of failures of internet banking or hacking of private information. This is a field that will always needs improvement and is thereby weakening the power of intellectual property.

The piracy problem, has of course, also negative influences on private information. Piracy on your information has all to do with not protecting your information good enough.
Paradigm
The legacy system is a result of this need for privacy and regulations. The law decides how everything will be handled and what is allowed and what is not. This privacy is not only a need, but also a protection with a punishment when not following the laws.
