Paradigms: New shows (reality) that interest people have grown in popularity. These shows are also much cheaper to produce than traditional television, thus requiring less ad support. Scandal and sensationalism is being required to gain and maintain viewers. Increasing segmentation and special interest channels and programming are being introduced. Selling shows directly to the consumer (ex – DVD sales, Itunes) is becoming a more important revenue stream. Timing: Year after year it seems that time pressures have consistently been growing. Work has been steadily increasing at the same time that family commitments increase with increased children’s activities. Free time has been declining, and yet the alternatives for tv watching have been increasing. People spend more time each year surfing the internet and playing video games.
