Description

The Internet is a publicly accessible worldwide system of interconnected computer networks that transmit data by packet switching using a standardized Internet Protocol (IP). It is composed of thousands of smaller commercial, academic, domestic, and government networks. The internet carries various information and services, such as electronic mail, online chat, and the interlinked Web pages and other documents of the World Wide Web.

The Internet nowadays derive from ARPANET, which was brought out at UCLA on October 29th, 1969, for the purpose of military use. Later, the computers of the U.S. National Laboratories for scientific reserch are also connected into the net.

The network gained a public face in the 1990s. In August 1991 CERN in Switzerland publicized the new World Wide Web project, two years after Tim Berners-Lee had begun creating HTML, HTTP and the first few web pages at CERN in Switzerland. In 1993, the Mosaic web browser version 1.0 was released , and by late 1994 there was growing public interest in the previously academic/technical Internet. By 1996 the word "Internet" was common public currency, but it referred almost entirely to the World Wide Web.

It was only in this half decade that the Internet has evolved from a boby in the cradle to a coooool & versatile guy/girl. Despite where you are and who you are, the whole world open a landscape for you when you sit in front of the computer. People are surfing on the Internet for all kinds of information: digtal books(though some are illegal indeed), booking hotel, doing businesses, play games and watching movies, etc. Internet has become an essential commodity in people's life, just like food and drinks.
