Government Policy

Description:

By the 2010, Mobile Internet Service in Korea will be most popular service and voice market will be smaller. Most revenues of telecom company will be created from mobile data services. However, at the moment, MIC(Ministry of Information & Communication) want to lead telecommunication market with 3 operators, SK Telecom, KTF and LGT. But to activate the wireless internet business, there should be several players like wired internet companies, content providers, entertainment companies etc. This is because content is also important as well as wireless network infrastructure. In order to activate mobile internet market, MIC should concern about how to participate and develop the content providers.

Enablers:

Wired internet portals like Google, Naver have higher competencies for mobile internet services than network providers as content is much more important than network infra. Google has successful experiences in wired internet with search services. So Government needs to open mobile company’s walled garden for the activation of mobile internet market.

Inhibitors:

-The walled garden, passive attitude on wired internet business should be first things to solve for market activation by the government and internet companies. If government can not give right policies to develop mobile internet market, telecommunication in Korea by 2010 will not be different from present.

Paradigms:

As network technologies developed fast and operates consistently invest a lot for the next generation wireless network, voice will be free and only data will be main source of company’s profits. Services and business based on data will be much more important than the others.
