Orange Revolution
2010 - 2015
Advancement in telecommunication and teleconference technology kept on nourishing. Technology, such as video conferencing, web conferencing, and media space, become more established. People started to use this technology extensively both for business and personal purposes.
Driven by the intention to increase working efficiency and supported by the technology advancement, companies tried to become more decentralized. Companies also considered specialized work as a more efficient option which increased the outsourcing activity. Due to the increasing congestion and pollution in cities, more people started to live in suburban areas. The government also encouraged more suburban development in order to ease the stress on civic infrastructure and improve the quality of life.
Increasing suburban live made people travel longer distances to reach their business activity centers. Car was still considered as a better option to travel long distances as compared to public transport. To minimize traffic congestion and reduce environmental impact, government implemented pay as you drive policy.
2015 - 2025
There was a more pronounced trend moving away from a traditional office setup. This was in the form of a smart office, where the radical changes such as hiring work desk by the hour were getting more popular. Advancement in ICT further lowered the cost and improved the quality of services such as videoconferencing. Companies were avoiding travel wherever possible by using these facilities. Multinationals preferred to be located in clusters. A majority of the companies established their offices in and around a common area-forming clusters, this eased the congestion problem to a little extent as then people instead of travelling to different places, travelled to one common area. Supplemented by public transport facilities to these areas, more people avoided travelling by cars. Rising public awareness was also causing companies to adopt traffic congestion as a Corporate Social Responsibility objective. Companies were encouraging employees to adopt public travel, which was reaching more destinations. There was a public transport allowance which made public travel free for employees. Those employees who still did not have access to public transport were encouraged to use car pools. In hindsight companies did not have a choice but to discourage use of cars, as a new government ruling made it more costly for companies to buy cars. Therefore the days of shelling out new cars to employees were coming to an end. The government had been forced to take action as there was an ever increasing awareness for environmental issues. The concept of work from home was catching up as there was a rapid advancement in ICT. However, working from home had its own challenges and therefore was still not a viable option.
2025 - 2040
The change in the way in which corporations were set up, which started already around 2010, had led to a whole new way of living in and around the cities. The decentralisation of offices and the move to a clustered set up led to a whole new transformation process. More people started to live closer to their work places in order to avoid long travel times as the roads became more congested than ever. The average travel time of 20 km had gone up to 3 hours, working near the work place reduced the travel time by at least 2 hours.
The clustered cities where people lived, worked and relaxed led to an influx of two working parent families as then it was easier to work part time due to the decreased travel time.
As travelling distances became shorter, oil scarcer and the roads were still congested, new ways of personal transportation such as Segway PUMA and Wiglet were taking off rapidly.
