How will a future workspace change the organisational hierarchy?
The 'knowledge economy' in which we currently live has a great impact on how business operates and will operate in the future. Companies are more and more competing on knowledge, rather than on production. This implies that the people of a company have become the company's competitive advantage. In day to day operations it is required to set different groups of people together to solve a specific problem with the specific knowledge of that group. When they're finished they move on the the next problem in a different group.
Organisations are adapting to these developments. Instead of keeping traditional hierarchies, companies are adapting more and more to networked structures, as they need more flexibility. Companies are building 'knowledge networks' in order to achieve success. A networked organisational structure also requires a new approach on leadership. The focus will be less on the expertise in a particular business area, but rather more on their ability to build teams and networks that will achieve the desired results.
