The creator of Second Life is Linden Lab which was a privately held company founded in 1999 by Philip Rosedale, the former CTO of RealNetworks. Linden Lab is funded by a group of notable early stage investors including Mitch Kapor, founder of Lotus Development, Catamount Ventures, and Benchmark Capital.[1]
From the perspective of usage, Second Life is a 3-D virtual world entirely built and owned by its residents. Since opening to the public in 2003, it has grown explosively and today is inhabited by a total of 4,253,282 people from around the globe.[2]
