=Description =
A non-governmental organization (NGO) is a legally constituted organization that operates independently from any government. It does not include any government or government appointed representatives in its membership. Generally, such organisations are created when certain motivated and resourceful people come together to work on a cause. The work may include generating public awareness about generic societal issues and also voicing public opinion to generate a political action. Most NGOs are not-for-profit and very often involved in providing information about their cause to government bodies. Some examples are Amnesty International and GreenPeace. The number of internationally operating NGOs is estimated at 40,000. National numbers are even higher: Russia has 277,000 NGOs; India is estimated to have around 1-2 million NGOs.

The Climate Action Network (CAN) is a worldwide network of roughly 500 Non- Governmental Organizations (NGOs) working to promote government and individual action to limit human-induced climate change to ecologically sustainable levels. CAN members work to achieve this goal through information exchange and the coordinated development of NGO strategy on international, regional, and national climate issues. CAN has seven regional offices which co-ordinate these efforts in Africa, Australia, Central and Eastern Europe, Western Europe, Latin America, North America, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.

CAN members place a high priority on both a healthy environment and development that "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs". Climate Action Network's vision is to protect the atmosphere while allowing for sustainable and equitable development worldwide.

It operated in all the continents with offices in UK (headquarters), US, Europe, Australia, China, India and Hong Kong. To help advance its mission, it has collaborated with former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair on Breaking the Climate Deadlock- an initiative focused on brokering a successful global deal on climate change. During 2008-2009, the initiative published a series of high-level reports and briefing papers outlining the key building blocks necessary to achieve a fair and effective global deal and break the political deadlock around climate action. The Climate Group has also partnered in other initiatives with organisations, including the Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSi), International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), and World Business Council on Sustainable Development (WBSCD)
