Description
New technological gadgets e.g. ipod, iphone, ipad are much more that a simple device. The new iphone4 for example allows you not only to call but also to video-call (with the help of the two cameras that it is equipped with). Moreover, it allows video recording and editing, internet access, e-mail, music, GPS system and access to the application store where from hundreds of application can be downloaded.
Enablers
Increasing focus on consumer needs. Companies pay more and more attention to the needs of their customers. They in turn ask for convenience: smaller devices, that they will be able to carry around all day, that will also perform multiple tasks.
The rate of technological advancement ,as described and analyzed in another driving force, can make the convergence happen. Take for example, computers. The first computers were big in size, almost as big as one room, and they could only perform simple mathematical calculations. Right now, on the other hand, they are much smaller and they perform multiple tasks and enable their users to connect with each other.
Inhibitors
Companies that are well-established in their sector and industry are afraid of potential power shifts and try to delay change as much as possible. Take for example the music industry, recording companies have lost substantial part of their power due to the changes in the industry.
Still high prices. When a new technological innovation is made available in the market, its price is usually pretty high. As time goes by and competition increases, prices go down.
