Why do existing websites let their information be used for mashups?

Many websites allow people to create mashups linking to their systems. They allow this usage, because many of the builders of mashups are very creative and do a lot of work to create and advertise their mashups. This is encouraged by existing companies like Google, Amazon and Yahoo, as this is free research and development and at the same time free marketing for them.
