Yes, the internet archive has a collection of books that are contributed by the community, these books are protected by a creative commons licence, which reserves some rights to the author. Furthermore wikimedia stores a wide array of educational books that can be edited by anyone in the classic wikipedia way and are protected under the GNU Free Documentation License.
