- What are the benefits from using tablets, as opposed to laptops/PC's?
Tablets bring several advantages to the classroom setting over Laptops and PCs
The traditional PC lab in schools is tethered to a a specific classroom layout - students must go to a specific room to access the computers and they sit facing screens, rather than the instructor or one-another. Laptops can eliminate the need for a specific room, but they still require frequent charging and take students attention away from each other and the instructor. Tablets are lighter, their batteries last longer, and they are easier to move about. Tablets are also less 'obtrusive', taking up less space in the classroom so that the focus in on learning not technology. Finally, students may extend their learning beyond the classroom taking their tablet with them to the school field or gym, to field trips and to their homes (Twining and Evans, 2005)
Making use of touch-screen and motion detection technologies, tablets increase can increase user engagement levels through enabling applications which are more tactile and kinesthetic, which may enhance learning particularly for those who learn visually/kinesthetically. (Orlando, 2008)
The following quote summarizes the interactivity advantages of the tablet well: The size and shape of the Tablets encourage empathy with the machine; the children "wrap themselves around them" (ICT coordinator, Queensbury: Twining and Evals, 2005)
3. Easy power-on / maintenance
Tablets are becoming easier to maintain and to power on/off than laptops/PCs, with as they may not require 'boot-time'. This reduces the time spent on maintenance and between uses.
