Spying, or information gathering of confidential information, which means that the holder of the information does not give a permission to be shared has played in important role in gaining advantage to competition, military strength or political power. Since the cyberspace is one big pile of information, it has grown to be the most popular medium for information gathering. Corporations and Governments gather information by various data mining techniques, key logging, Trojans and etc. in order to be a step ahead.
One such case has been the accusation by the British government of China and its hackers, they claim that Chinese spies broke into Britsh banks and financial services firms in order to gather information about its economy. Other examples involve breaking into government organizations such as NASA, Lockheed Martin and the Pentagon, in order to gather information about military projects.
For this reason, the German court in Karlsruhe said that cyber spying violated individuals rights to privacy and could be used only in exceptional cases, therefore blocking pledges of investigators to covertly search PCs online.
